Good Morning America: Sally Field
Good Morning America took a look at a clip from the upcoming movie Lincoln, in which Sally Field plays the wife, Mary Todd, of the president Abraham Lincoln, played by an amazing Daniel Day-Lewis.
The clip depicts the two sitting in a theater as Field’s character chastises Lincoln for halting the abolishment of slavery until the Civil War is finished.

Good Morning America sits down with Sally Field to talk about her role in the new movie Lincoln. She talks about working with Daniel Day Lewis on the set.
Field is getting a lot of Oscar buzz around her performance, one she almost didn’t get.
Field said she had to fight for the role, but it needed to be that way according to her. She said she needed to demand she was the one for the role. The director of the film, Steven Spielberg, let her audition for the role and then Lewis told her to come back for a second audition. He flew from Ireland for a single day of dress rehearsal to see if they would click on screen.
She said the first time she met him, they were both in character. They continued by spending a long hour doing improv as their characters and the rest is history.

Field said she was in character the entire time. Spielberg had a great set ready for everyone to act on, with the crew being out of sight and never mentioning anything from the outside world. The whole production was shot on a small budget in a very short amount of time.
GMA: Daniel Day Lewis Text Messages
Field said to keep in touch with Lewis she would send texts to him, since he does not have email and he was on the other side of the world from her. She said it helped them develop a relationship, a relationship they needed to develop for their characters sake. She said if there had never been a Mary Todd, there would have never been an Abraham Lincoln. She felt the emotions that Lincoln never felt.
