A total of 59 people have sat next to Kelly Ripa since Regis Philbin retired last November, and Strahan could be her permanent partner.
“This could be somebody’s ticket to stardom,” Sandra Gonzalez, staff writer for Entertainment Weekly, said. “The possibilities are endless for the person who gets this job.”
Live With Kelly Co-Host Search: Rob Lowe & Seth Meyers?
Last June, it was reported that Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos was in the running, along with her best friend Bravo host Andy Cohen and TV host Ryan Seacrest. In January, TMZ reported actor Rob Lowe could be her next co-host. The LA Times said Saturday Night Live writer Seth Meyers was also a contender. Now, multiple media outlets are saying Strahan is the pick.
“If we can recapture the magic that they carried on for ten years, I think people are really excited to see if the show can deliver again,” Gonzalez said.
ABC News’ Lindsay Davis said her top pick would be Good Morning America’s own Sam Champion.
Strahan Will Still Keep Fox Sports Analyst Job
The LA Times has reported that if Strahan gets the gig, he will be bicoastal. He’ll be in New York during the week for Live! and back to Los Angeles on the weekends for his job as a Fox Sports analyst.
The 40-year-old Strahan rose to fame as a star defensive end in the National Football League. Strahan played his entire career with the New York Giants, and was a Super Bowl XXV champion.
Strahan has appeared in numerous commercials, from Sports Authority to Subway’s $5 Foot Long campaign. He has also guest starred on several TV shows. He co-hosted with Kelly on Live! many times this year, and seemed to be comfortable in the role.
