GMA: HBO’s Behind The Candelabra
Premiering on HBO on May 26, Behind the Candelabra tells the tale of Liberace, played by Michael Douglas, and his much younger lover Scott Thorson, played by Matt Damon. Executive producer Jerry Weintraub sat down with Good Morning America to discuss the film and his friendship with Liberace.
Jerry is the man behind the Karate Kid films and the Oceans trilogy, but he thinks Behind the Candelabra will be the film people remember. He said the bold film has a great script, a great director in Steven Soderbergh and he said the actors went all out. At a peak in his career, Matt Damon took a big step saying yes to this film, Jerry said.
Michael Douglas once told Jerry that he couldn’t imagine having the guts to play such a role at Matt Damon’s age. The first scene shot for the film was one in which Matt Damon emerges from a pool in a small swimsuit and lays on top of Michael Douglas to portray an intimate moment between Liberace and Scott Thorson. Filming this scene, Jerry started to have second thoughts, but Matt Damon’s mother turned to him and said, “That was beautiful, Jerry. That was a beautiful scene.”
Good Morning America: Producer Jerry Weintraub & Liberace
Through Behind the Candelabra, executive producer, Jerry Weintraub, gets to share with the world a story about his friend, Liberace. Jerry said he knew Liberace in Vegas and in Los Angeles. “He was a great host and a nice guy … He lived a tortured life because he lived in a time when if you were gay, you could not come out of the closet,” Jerry said.
But now Liberace’s story has been told in Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace, the memoir by Scott Thorson, and through the film adaptation of the book. “He was flamboyant … He was Lady Gaga and Madonna and Elton John before they were born,” Jerry said.
Good Morning America: Behind The Candelabra and Cannes
Behind the Candelabra premieres on HBO on Sunday, May 26, but it also screens next week at the Cannes Film Festival.
Nike supported Jerry Weintraub by sending him three pairs of one-of-a-kind sneakers for the festival; one pair designed red, white and blue for the French flag (where Cannes takes place); one pair grey and red “to walk around in”; and one pair of specially designed Liberace-inspired tuxedo sneakers.
Each pair said “Cannes 2013,” with the tuxedo sneakers sported a quote from Liberace himself. “Too much of a good thing is wonderful.”
