People Magazine is touting him as “the new Billy Crystal” and said that he and Hugh Jackman are the greatest award show hosts of the decade.
While flipping and dancing around characters from this year’s plays and musicals, including Kinky Boots and Bring It On! the Musical, NPH welcomed Mike Tyson to the stage to join his song an dance. In the middle of the spectacle, Harris still managed to radiate his persona and keep the mood spontaneous.
Good Morning America Tony Awards: Cicely Tyson Best Actress
Robin Roberts’ favorite moment of the night was Cicely Tyson winning Best Actress. It’s been 30 years since she was last on Broadway and her acceptance was chilling. You could really feel her emotion and gratitude toward the theater.
“It’s been 30 years since I stood on stage,” Tyson said. “I really didn’t think it would happen again in my lifetime and I was pretty comfortable with that, except that I had this burning desire to do just one more. One more great role, I said. I didn’t want to be greedy. I just wanted one more, and it came to me with no effort on my part.”
As the music cued to wrap her, Tyson concluded, “Please wrap it up, it says,” she said. “Well, that’s exactly what you did with me. You wrapped me up in your arms after 30 years and now I can go home with a Tony.” Tyson won for her role in The Trip to Bountiful.
Simon Cowell Egged on Britain’s Got Talent
Finally, someone put Simon Cowell in his place. A former contestant on Britain’s Got Talent stormed the stage during last night’s performance and started throwing eggs at the surly judge. She was promptly removed from the stage.
Just because you tell Simon to go somewhere, doesn’t mean he’ll stay. Cowell tweeted later, “I really don’t like eggs,” and “I don’t think eggs should be allowed on talent shows. Discuss?” He also said he went back and watched the performance that was interrupted and said the singers didn’t miss a note.
