GMA: Emma Watson, The Bling Ring & Paris Hilton’s Closet
Harry Potter co-star Emma Watson said in an interview about her upcoming movie, Bling Ring, that it was an eye-opening experience, and even said that celebrity excess (which she is not a part of, owning only eight pairs of shoes) is a form of kleptomania.
Following a true-to-life story of teenagers that were robbing the homes of celebrities, The Bling Ring actually went inside Paris Hilton’s closet for one scene, where the teens were emptying the place out in one of their thieving runs. The closet has wall-to-wall shoes, clothes, and accessories—a striking display of celebrity excess.
Good Morning America: Emma Watson Has Eight Pairs Of Shoes?
However, according to Emma Watson, she doesn’t buy into this idea of celebrity indulgence, telling UK publication RadioTimes that she only owns about eight pairs of shoes. She did admit to sounding a little like a hypocrite, though, because she was dressed in designer clothes during the interview. In defense of her case, most of the high-end designer clothes that she wears to premieres are returned after the show is over.
Merle Ginsberg, contributing editor for The Hollywood Reporter, said that it was very brave for Emma Watson to come out and say this, because it takes the mythology and glamour away, putting her on the same level as us peons and demystifying herself a bit.
GMA: Celebrities Under Pressure To Dress Flashy
Emma’s personal clothing seems quite a bit less flashy, judging by photos of the star, standing in stark contrast to what she found while in Paris Hilton’s closet during the shoot for The Bling Ring, where Emma said that she saw brand new clothes with the price tag still on them. She assumed that Hilton just bought them to have them.
Cameron Silver said that Paris Hilton’s excessive wardrobe has to do with the pressure they feel to constantly look fresh for the ever-watching cameras and paparazzi. This can be not just a challenge, but a costly one, as well.
Good Morning America: Emma Watson Going Back To Brown University
Emma Watson, overall, has never seemed too shaken by being a celebrity, saying that the definition of the word has changed. Watson doesn’t think that being called a celebrity necessarily has to do with having a craft, which, when you look at Paris Hilton, is hard not to agree with.
The Bling Ring is currently in theaters, but Emma Watson won’t be seen on the big screen after this for quite some time. Watson is going on hiatus to attend Brown University and get a degree.
