Good Morning America: Trash to Treasure
Lara Spencer has been asking everyone to send her their junk. Well, not all their junk, but anything that she can reupholster, paint, sand, lacquer or refinish in a way to recycle the old trash into treasure.
Spencer went to the flea market on her own to try and find some good items she could fix up and resell. Spencer said the key to finding the best items at a flea market is not being afraid to dig. And Spencer is definitely not afraid to dig or negotiate the price down.
She was able to find an old 19th century ladder with the label still visible, which she bought for $30. She also found some really nice wooden chairs that she bought for $40 after negotiating the price down from $90. She found some raggedy and beat up dining room chairs that she bought for $30 each and a nice dresser she found at a thrift store.
Good Morning America: Recycling Vintage Finds
Lara Spencer said you can make most things look new again with a little paint and hard work. And she was not kidding.
She turned the 19th century ladder into a table by flipping it on its side, adding a nice piece of glass on top for a table and staining the wooden parts of the ladder. And the ladder is still functional. If you need to use it, take the glass off, turn it right side up and you have a ladder.
As for the chairs Spencer found at the flea market for $40, she said they sell on Ebay for over $1,000. She decided to not do too much with the chairs except put a nice cushion on them that she reupholstered with some fabric and some staples.
GMA: Thrift Store Dresser & Dining Room Chairs
With the dresser from the thrift store, Spencer put some flat white paint on the entire dresser and polished the brass handles, making it look new again.
And with the four dining room chairs she bought, Spencer stripped off some of the laced wood, painted the chair a light blue color and reupholster the cushioned with some fabric. They looked nothing like the ugly, chairs they were before.
