Good Morning America: Allyn Rose
Allyn Rose, a Miss America Pageant contestant, has to make the toughest decision of her life and at the young age of 24. Rose has decided to undergo a double mastectomy later this year. After losing her mother to breast cancer when she was 16 years old, she has decided she is going to have both of her breasts removed as a precaution.
Almost all the women in her family have died from breast cancer, from her mother to her grandmother to her grandmother’s sister. She said when her mother got breast cancer at the age of 27 she began writing a journal about her life with cancer.
When she passed, Rose read the journals which detailed her mother’s longing to run again, she was a marathon runner, and her beliefs that no man would ever love her with only one breast. Rose said after reading the journals she has decided she wants to be there for her children as they grow.
Good Morning America: Predisposition to Breast Cancer
Rose said she has had the predisposition for breast cancer since she was younger. Her father even told her mother he thought she should get her second breast removed as well. But her mother could not part with something so close to her femininity, a decision that would cost her her life when the cancer came back in the other breast many years later.
Good Morning America: Double Mastectomy
Some doctors are cautioning Rose to wait a little longer before she makes the decision, but she said she is only three years away from being as old as her mother when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rose said she does not want to take the chance.
As for her decision affecting her career in the beauty industry she said she will not compete any longer in pageants. She wants to be proactive in her health care and be a voice in teaching women how to be proactive against breast cancer.
