Ellen: Miyavi Unbroken
Miyavi from the new movie Unbroken came by Ellen to talk about the film. Ellen reached out to him because she thought he was brilliant in the film. This was his first talk show in English and he said he was very nervous about it. He asked Ellen to speak slowly.
Ellen: Miyavi Acting for the First Time
Miyavi is a huge musician in Japan and he’d never acted before. He said Angelina Jolie, the director, found him because she’d seen him on the internet playing music. She came to Miyavi’s office in Tokyo out of the blue. Miyavi hadn’t even heard of the movie. The Japanese casting director she talked to asked Miyavi about his music, what kind of films he likes, and who’s his favorite actor. He said Angelina Jolie was his favorite actress and he joked that’s why he got cast.
Ellen: Miyavi on Unbroken’s Message
Unbroken is a film based on a true story, the life of U.S. Olympain Louie Zamperini, a pilot in World War II who spends a lot of time in prisoner of war camps after his bomber is shot down.
Miyavi plays a real life person, Mutsuhiro “The Bird” Watanabe, one of the leaders at a Japanese prisoner of war camp, who in real life was later called a war criminal because of his abuse of prisoners.
Miyavi said he wasn’t sure if he’d be capable of doing this role because he had no experience acting and this role was very intensive. He also was nervous about portraying the Japanese in a bad light, being Japanese himself. But Angelia said her intention was to make something that could be a bridge between different countries. Her message was that if this happened somewhere, it could happen anywhere. Miyavi said this message was meaningful to him, so he decided to do the film.
Ellen: Miyavi Getting into the Role
Miyavi said it was very hard for him to be cruel in the film and he actually got physically ill at one point. But he said the story was important to him, so he wanted to be realistic. He said the other actors were really nice, but he felt like he had to keep his distance to put a reality into his character. He said he kept imagining they wanted to kill his family. He has two daughters and he knew he would do anything to protect them. He said this is the position everyone in the world was in at the time of the film. This was a really hard mindset for him to get into.
Ellen said that Miyavi was so good in the film and that she really hated him in the movie. That’s why she decided she had to meet him because he was so good.
Ellen: Miyavi “Let Go” Performance
Miyavi then performed one of his songs, “Let Go.” Miyavi is incredibly talented. I wasn’t expecting such a soft-spoken person to be this cool of a rocker. He played the guitar with a unique style that was equal parts funky and hard rock. He was just amazing to watch and it was impossible not to nod my head as I listened to him perform.
Unbroken is in theaters now.
