Ellen: Amanda Eaton Teacher Surprise
Ellen surprised a great teacher called Amanda Eaton on her show today. Amanda is a first grade teacher and a viewer of Ellen’s show who knows her wrote into Ellen to tell her about her. Amanda Eaton is a finalist for Teacher of the Year in her state and just donated a kidney to save her father’s life. Amanda was in the audience, but she had no idea she was going to be called down to be interviewed by Ellen. Amanda Eaton couldn’t believe it.

Amanda Eaton said she had to ask her surgeon for special permission to go on Ellen. She had a special pillow she had to use to make sure she was comfortable if she laughed too hard and her surgeon wrote on the pillow that she was okay and that she can go on Ellen.

Amanda Eaton loves her kids and the kids feel the same way about her, because Ellen had a special video made for Amanda. The video had many of the people in her life talking about her career. A teacher and a parent said that Amanda treated all of her students like her own children. A former student said she’s got a really good reading voice.
Amanda will help families that might not have a lot by buying them clothes or taking them out to eat. Amanda Eaton also calls her student’s parents when their students do something right, as well as wrong. “I have the luxury of being with people’s children more than they do during the work week and parents don’t hear that they’re doing a good job. To be able to say, you have an awesome kiddo and you’re doing a great job and share the good,” she said.

Amanda told the story of a special student she helped out. Once the student wasn’t her student anymore, she took her out a few times to get food. One time, the girl wasn’t eating, so Amanda Eaton asked her what was wrong. It turned out it was because the girl wanted to bring the food home to her family. So Amanda bought food for her family.

Amanda Eaton said she wasn’t sure how much money she had spent on her students. Ellen asked if it was around $2,000 and Amanda said that’s probably around the amount she spends on them each year. So Ellen presented her with $5,000 in a blue bow. Amanda Eaton said it was so pretty and that all money should be kept like that. Amanda said she loved what she does and it’s really important to her to give back to people. She wants to be a role model like Ellen.
“I get a lot of attention and there are people that don’t get attention. Unless I had you on the show, people would not know about you and know what you do. And there are so many people like you that I honor and that I am so appreciative of. And those kids are lucky to have you as a teacher. Those parents are lucky to have their kids in your class. You’re amazing,” Ellen said. So to make sure Amanda Eaton continues to do amazing things, Ellen and Wells Fargo gave her a check for $50,000.
