Dr. Phil: Pregnant Teenager Out of Control
Kristen told Dr. Phil today that her 18-year-old daughter, Sara, is absolutely out of control. She started drinking alcohol and using drugs in middle school. Over the years, her drug use has escalated from marijuana to pills to cocaine and now even heroin.
Kristen tried to turn to the court system for help in controlling Sara. Sara was put into several group homes designed for at-risk youth, but Sara would either run away or be kicked out. One time, Sara even went missing for four days when she ran away from a group home. Sara refused to talk on camera about what she did for those four days.
Kristen and her husband Ralph say that one night, when Sara was 16, she stole her mother’s car and led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a fiery crash. Police had to pull her out of the car. Kristen and Ralph are at a loss for what to do now and both of them say Sara is incredibly unpredictable.

Eight months ago, Kristen was diagnosed with breast cancer. Time might be running out for her and so she wants to save her daughter before she goes. She’s also terrified for the health of her unborn grandson. Sara is now seven months pregnant and shows no signs of trying to stop her out of control lifestyle.
Dr. Phil: Pregnant Girl Smoking & Using Drugs
Sara said she’s excited about being pregnant. She said the baby will help her get her priorities straight. However, she admits she’s still doing drugs. “When I was first pregnant and I was doing drugs, I only used heroin and crack for like two weeks. The only drugs I use at the moment is I just smoke marijuana. I do smoke cigarettes. At least a pack a day,” Sara said very conversationally.
“The first time I saw Sara high after knowing she was pregnant, my heart just dropped. I am so angry at her for doing this to her son,” Kristen said.
Sara said that she doesn’t think she has a drug problem or that her life is out of control. “I can smoke crack or do whatever and then the next day I’ll wake up and I won’t even want it,” Sara said.
Dr. Phil: Mother’s Cancer Diagnosis Doesn’t Affect Teenager At All
Kristen said she’s terrified that the baby will die or be born addicted to drugs. She’s scared Sara has done irreversible damage to the baby. Kristen also said that her breast cancer diagnosis has not done anything to slow down Sara’s behavior. Kristen went through 12 rounds of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments.
Sara said that Kristen is having a sympathy party and expecting her to change because of it. “My mom has used her cancer to gain sympathy from people. I feel like my mom just likes to play the victim, in every situation she possibly can,” Sara said.
Dr. Phil: Doing Drugs While Pregnant
Kristen and Ralph joined Dr. Phil on stage, but Sara refused to come out. Dr. Phil told Kristen and Ralph that if a pregnant women takes drugs, it can have disastrous effects on the baby. The baby takes in blood and oxygen supply through the placenta from the mother. What she puts in her blood, goes to the baby. So when Sara does heroin, research indicates that the baby can have 50 to 100 percent of the level of toxicity of what’s in the baby.
There are 4,000 chemicals in tobacco and 60 known carcinogens. These are also going to the baby. Kristen and Ralph both said that they believed this was an emergency and things were at a crisis point right now.

Sara came on stage, looking visibly upset. She called her mom and Ralph liars. She refused to shake Dr. Phil’s hand. She said no. She also claimed she hadn’t done drugs since early in her pregnancy. But she also said she used cocaine twice and smoked marijuana since she’s been in Los Angeles.
