Dr. Phil: Seven Months Pregnant & On Drugs
Dr. Phil continued the second part of a two part show today, talking to an 18-year-old pregnant girl named Sara who admits to smoking cigarettes and marijuana daily and doing heroin and cocaine occasionally while pregnant. Sara and her mother Kristin, her stepfather Ralph, and her self-described drug addict older sister Sadie, all came by Dr. Phil’s show.

In addition to admitting that she had done cocaine and marijuana the night before in a hotel room paid for by Dr. Phil, it now turns out she may have been drinking the night before as well.
Dr. Phil asked Sara if she’d told a PA on his staff that she’d been drinking with an Australian guy the night before that she had met that night. She denied drinking with him, but she also said she left her state I.D. in his room when she emptied out her pockets. Her mother Kristin said that this was in the middle of the night, but Sara denied that.
Dr. Phil: She Thinks She’d Be A Good Mother
Sara said in a previously taped video that she thought her life “was straightened out enough” that she could raise the child on her own if she got a job. Her stepfather Ralph said she’s “delusional” because she has no job and no education and no “concept of what is involved in child-raising.”
Kristen said that she’s scared for the baby. “What scares me most about Sara raising a baby is that unless she gets her temper under control, I truly believe that that baby may be abused by her. She’s been abusing it in utero, why wouldn’t she after he’s born?” she said.
Dr. Phil: Family Legacy of Substance Abuse
Dr. Phil told Sara and her sister Sadie that their mother Kristin’s parenting skills were terrible. Kristin was an alcoholic, which made her negligent and abusive to her children. This made put a huge stress on both of the girls. Sara was pulling her hair out when she was two and trying to throw herself out of a window when she was five. They both drank alcohol their mother left out. Dr. Phil said that it makes sense that they have problems with substance abuse, anger, and dysfunctional behavior.
Sara and Sadie both began to cry as Dr. Phil told her that she didn’t get a fair shake when she was growing up and that she deserved better. Dr. Phil said that this legacy has to stop at some point. He said he didn’t want Sara to do the same thing to her baby that her mother did to her.
“I don’t want that to happen,” Sara said.
Dr. Phil: Is It Legal To Abuse Drugs While Pregnant?
Dr. Phil talked to several experts in order to reach Sara. Los Angeles-based attorney and child advocate Areva Martin was one of those experts and she told Sara that she was in very real danger of losing her baby. She also said that in many states, it’s a crime to abuse drugs doing pregnant.
“Do you want to have your baby on the floor of a jail and someone take that baby away even before you can touch, coddle, or name that child? That’s what we’re talking about here,” Areva Martin said.
