Dr Phil: Hoarding Mother
Dr Phil showed off a beautiful home with a manicured lawn and brick paths. From the outside, it looks inviting, but the inside is disturbing. The home is filled with clutter, and its occupant, Pamela, had to create pathways to navigate through the home. Pamela insists that she is not a hoarder, but her kids think otherwise and feel sidelined in favor of garbage.
Pamela’s home is completely full of clutter, with nowhere to sit or eat. “My definition of a hoarder is someone that doesn’t do anything around their house. They don’t take out their trash,” she said. “I don’t believe I’m a hoarder.”
Charity, age 27, thinks her mother is an awful hoarder, who used to sort through the garbage for anything she wanted to save. Perry, age 30, admitted to sneaking trash out of the house. She freaked out at the notion of having a garage sale. Umbrella strollers, car seats, plastic toys, stuffed animals, and other childhood souvenirs dominate the house, even though her children are grown.
Dr Phil: Hoarding Dentist
Dr Phil met a hoarding dentist named Pamela who practices from home and has resisted her family’s attempts to intervene regarding her clutter habit.
Shockingly, Pamela operates her dental practice out of this hoarding house, which should probably be illegal. Even her son Perry called it a health hazard. But Pamela said that her patients understand she is “in the middle of projects.”
The family has no place to stay when they come to visit her. Someone should call the dental licensing board or health department about this nonsense! A previous family intervention in 2012 was dismissed by Pamela as an intervention.
Dr Phil: Distraught Maniac
Instead of listening to what her mother had to say, Pamela flipped out on her family and dismissed their opinions. “My mother was acting like a distraught maniac,” Pamela said. Perry had to call 911, and she wound up in the hospital.
Pamela still seems bitter about how this all went down. She thought that her family turned on her, and she repeated a bunch of harsh words that were exchanged among the family members. “I feel like my family ganged up on me…and then left me to die,” she concluded.
Dr Phil: Hoarder Family Reunion
Chandra, Pamela’s daughter, has not seen her mother since this 2012 incident. She and her father, Richard, along with siblings Perry, Charity, and Preston were reunited onstage. Pam said she feels sad and misunderstood.
“Not one of these people really ever helped me around the house. They never really were supportive, and it slowly, slowly got out of control,” Pamela said. What did she want from Dr Phil? She asked him to get to the bottom of where the family has become broken.
Dr Phil got Pam to agree that she trusts that he knows what he is doing, so that she can’t go back on this opinion later. Yet again, Pamela maintained that she does not think she could possibly be a hoarder.
