Former Teen Mom star Amber Portwood visited Dr Phil one month after being released early from jail on drug charges. She said that she knows she was not a good mother to daughter Leah when she was addicted to drugs, which made her selfish.

Dr Phil recalled that her outrageous behavior, including beating her ex-boyfriend, was caught on tape and landed her in hot water. After serving 17 months in prison, Portwood said she has changed and it’s hard to watch herself from the past.

“It’s embarrassing,” she said, adding that she feels bad about hitting Gary. “I love Gary with all my heart,” she said, but she does not think they are a good match. Dr Phil wondered what set her off to attack him.

“Three days before we started filming, he had told me that he had cheated on me,” Portwood revealed, attributing her reaction to that surprising news. She said their relationship now is cordial, and they remain in contact through their daughter.

Amber Portwood said she has fond memories of the beginning of their relationship, and it makes her sad to think about what she has lost. She denied the rumors that they are back together, adding that Gary has a new girlfriend.

Back in June 2011, Portwood failed in rehab and almost killed herself. She said she did not care whether she would die or not. “I knew the amount of pills I was taking was crazy, but it didn’t matter to me at the time,” she said.

She felt that her life had gotten off track, and she felt separated from her daughter. Dr Phil pointed out that it was probably a good decision to keep Amber away from Leah if the mother was on drugs all the time.

Dr Phil pointed out that many people did not realize how bad things got for Amber. For months during rehab, she was abusing drugs more than ever. She said that she abused Fentanyl patches by eating them, because they would not show up on drug tests.

Amber said she has now been sober for about two years, though she remains afraid of using once again. Dr Phil wondered why Portwood chose to go to prison instead of completing rehab. She said that she was making weekly court visits, and she was abusing pills.

Amber Portwood told Dr Phil that she tried to kill herself the night before, and decided that if she woke up, something had to change the course of her life. She said that she was high in court when she asked the judge for a radical change.

On this day, Gary came to court with Amber, because she planned to opt out of treatment and go to prison. She felt that she would die if she continued in rehab, where she was still abusing drugs.

Portwood spoke a lot about addiction and how difficult it would be to get out of bed or function without the drugs you abused. Amber said she missed her daughter when she was occasionally sober, but that she did not think about her too often when she was high.

During her 17-month prison stay, Amber estimated that she saw her daughter three times.
