Dr Phil: Why Do Men Cheat?
Why do men cheat? I don’t think we are going to find the answer from this episode of Dr Phil. But we have met Emerald, who feeds her 10-year-old twins stories about their philandering father’s other children. Shawn blames his wife for the countless times he has cheated on her. But Dr Phil is concerned about both parents exploiting children.
Dr Phil: Children In The Middle
Dr Phil counseled a couple about putting children in the middle of their relationship problems and setting a negative example of relationships for them.
Why does Shawn let his daughters visit his other girlfriends? He said that he has done it in the past, but this couple does not seem to get anywhere without blaming one another. I think they should get a divorce, but that is another reason I am not a therapist.
Dr Phil said that the girls are sad that he misses their birthdays and other family events. They have been taught to blame their failing grades on their father’s absence. The girls admit that their mother has shown them the evidence of her father’s cheating.
Dr Phil: Father’s Love Child
The girls even said they feel they are being replaced by their father’s love child. But so much of what they say sounds like it is fed to them from Emerald.
By this point, Shawn and Emerald were both in tears. Would they make some changes? “Children would rather be from a broken home than live in one,” Dr Phil said.
Dr Phil: Children & Adultery
Both parents shoulder some of the blame here, and Dr Phil pointed out to Emerald that the kids will eventually resent her for putting them in the middle of his adultery.
As for Shawn, Dr Phil was worried that the girls would follow their father’s example and have dysfunctional romantic relationships with other men. “They will be hungry for that male validation, hungry for that male acceptance. You are setting them up for failure,” he said.
Dr Phil: Therapy Vs Divorce
Dr Phil said that the only reason he wanted to take on this couple’s story is because he is concerned for their children. Emerald once again thrust the blame back toward her husband.
But should the couple get a divorce or figure out some way to get through Shawn’s problems? Dr Phil said they need to make a decision for the best of the children.
He offered to get them help, but if that did not work out, he wanted them to get a divorce and move on with their lives.
