Dr. Phil: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Ten days after Kassandra Toruga tried to kill her, Angelique gave birth to her son, Riley. He is now a happy and healthy two year old. She said that she thanks God everyday that he’s in her arms. However, the past is haunting Angelique. Dr. Phil wants to help her get treatment for what he thinks could be post-traumatic stress disorder. He also wants to help her raise her son to be aware of danger.
Dr. Phil: Overcoming PTSD
After Kassandra tried to kill her, Angelique has spent the last two years on edge. She is constantly checking on Riley while he sleeps and doesn’t sleep very well either. She doesn’t trust anyone and doesn’t leave her son with a babysitter.
Angelique’s greatest fear is that Kassandra wil get out of jail and come after her again. She’s afraid that she will never overcome the anxiety and will live in a state of constant panic. Her mother is also concerned. Angelique plays the “What If?” game in her head. What if Kassandra gets out? What if she hadn’t turned around on three?
Dr Phil: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Effects
Dr. Phil said that “What If?” will drive you crazy if you let it. He suspects that Angelique is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He said that it is psychological and neurological The brain replays and replays everything that happened that day. It causes nightmares and disrupts you sleep and your life.
The good news is that PTSD is treatable. Angelique will be getting help and a counselor will help her evaluate her life to see if it truly is PTSD.
As for Kassandra, Dr. Phil said that most people that do what she did will come out of prison and no longer want to come after their victim. By the time Kassandra is released, Angelique and her son will no longer be her obsession.
Dr. Phil: Teaching Children To Self-Protect
While Angelique is terrorized by her thought and fears, her son doesn’t have to be. Dr Phil said that it’s important to teach children to self protect. They should be aware of their surroundings, but not afraid of the world.
