Dr Phil: Nikol & Mark
Nikol and her husband Mark came to Dr. Phil to get help on their marriage. They didn’t realize that they would be getting dissected and critiqued in order to be better for one another. They had their pasts combed and Dr. Phil gave his diagnosis for both of them. He thinks they need separate counseling to be better before they can work on their marriage.
Dr Phil offered Mark and Nikol separate counseling. After that they can reassess their relationship.
Dr Phil: Why Does Nikol Stay With Mark?
Nikol thinks Mark is passionate and creative. She said his moments of passion far outshine the moments of racism and homophobia. She would much rather be in a relationship with him and deal with the bad than be alone.
Mark said he is afraid to let someone get close and get hurt. If he hurts someone it’s just another thing that he screwed up and he is used to that. He allows himself to feel hurt if he’s the one that hurt them. He decided a long time ago that he screwed up.
Dr Phil: Counseling For Mark
Dr. Phil asked Mark why he hasn’t taken time to get counseling before. He said that costs money and he doesn’t want to waste the money on himself. Dr. Phil offered Mark counseling in his hometown, paid in full. Mark fell into a wave of tears. He said no one has ever offered him help like that.
Dr Phil said he believes that there are moments when wrongs can be made right. Mark and Nikol both deserve help and are worth that. What happened to them was horrible and they deserve a break. Nikol will get therapy as well, and after they have both worked on themselves they can reassess their marriage.
Dr Phil Final Comments
The most important thing Dr. Phil wants these two to take away is that life has momentum. They were headed in a bad direction so they need to correct their way. He hoped that this hour was the stimulus they need to continue changing. Just coming to the show was a step in the right direction.
