Dr Phil Tries to Understand Troubled Teen
Nikki’s father passed away when she was six. He was an alcoholic at a young age and had ALS (Lou Gerhig’s Disease). He was in Alcoholic’s Anonymous until he died. She said she watched her father go from a strong man, laughing, singing, and walking, to a vegetable. Her love for her dad was deep, and his death really messed Nikki up.
Nikki’s mom was seeing another man when her father was dying and had a baby when Nikki was seven. She was remarried at eight. She said that that she never had time to grieve and to have her mom to help her. She said that’s what she wants help with, not the fighting.
After her dad’s death, Nikki’s grades fell and she started drinking and doing drugs. Dr Phil said it’s not too late for Nikki. He told her this is the beginning of a better life for her.
Dr Phil Parenting Lessons: How To Talk To Your Children

Nikki told Dr Phil what makes her so angry about her mom. Fighting has been her way to deal with grief from losing her father at a young age.
Nikki and her mom Yvette came together on the stage to confront their issues. Nikki said her mother really tries hard and she admires that about her. She hates that her mom name calls and uses her father’s memory against her. She doesn’t like getting yelled at by Yvette.
Yvette said that she does call her daughter names and tries to stop. She doesn’t like that her daughter doesn’t listen or pay attention to her. Dr Phil said that calling her violent names is not a soution.
“You’re the adult, act like it. You don’t call your daughter names,” Dr Phil told Yvette.
Dr Phil presented some solutions to the problems that are healthy and not based in anger. Yvette and Nikki need to understand each other’s needs. If they can teach each other their needs, then they can both be better.
Nikki was telling Dr Phil about how she was spiraling out of control when her father died. Yvette didn’t give her help she needed, so she is still in the same spot as when her father died.
“Time heals nothing, it’s what you do in that time that makes a difference,” Dr Phil said.
Smoking is Nikki’s way to self medicate her anger and stress. She’s found a way to live that gets her through the day, but it’s not healthy.
Dr Phil Sends Troubled Teen to PNP Centers
Dr Phil believes that Yvette is over her head with Nikki. She needs another option and can’t just go home and try to solve the problem. He believes that this is a dysfunctional family situation and Nikki is the only one speaking up and acting out. He promised to bring in help, but Yvette has so much work to do.
As for Nikki, Dr Phil wants an all over evaluation on Nikki. He doesn’t believe that she’s bipolar and wants a full body, mind, and heart workup on Nikki. He told her about the PNP Center, somewhere Nikki can go to get the evaluations and skills that will help her to cope with her grief and life focus.
Nikki said she really wants the help.
