Dr Oz: What Are Water Pills?
Dr Oz said he was going to blow the lid off the new pill that many women are turning to in hopes of losing weight. It’s a pill that promises to cut your physique, tone your muscle, and shape your body. They’re called water pills, but are they safe?
They’re cheap, effective, and easy to get, and the over-the-counter pills, also known as diuretics, are a less potent version of the same drugs prescribed by doctors for problems like high blood pressure and heart failure. Consumers are turning to them in hopes of slimming down fast, and the FDA is concerned about the use of them for weight loss. They recently issued a warning saying “water pills… can have serious side effects and should only be used under the supervision of a health care professional.”
Dr Oz wanted to know why millions of women are using the potentially dangerous drug.

Dr Oz was joined my Alauna, who takes the pills. She explained that she was drawn to them for weight loss purposes and to prevent bloating. She said she usually takes it as a quick fix, explaining that she uses them about 2-3 times per week. She said she sees a flatter stomach and increased definition after taking the pills.
Dr Oz said the reality is that there are problems with the pills. He showed that the ingredients in water pills include caffeine, pamabrom, and triamterene, which don’t burn fat, can cause severe dehydration, and can short circuit your organs.
Dr Oz: What Happens When You Take A Water Pill
Dr Oz then explained that when you take a water pill, you actually pee out about three pounds of fluid. Alauna said, “That’s about right!”
Dr Oz then said inside the fluid that is being flushed out is electrolytes, nutrients, vitamins, and other things our body needs. When that happens, your heart starts to have palpitations, and then you get brain fog and delirium. Alauna said after hearing all this, she was going to stop taking them.
Dr Oz: What Is The Rebound Effect?
Dr Oz then shared that there’s a second part of the puzzle as well. He explained that so many people take the pills to lose weight and sometimes they just end up doing the opposite. Dr Oz welcomed Natasha, who shared that one day she woke up incredibly sick. She actually thought she was pregnant, but when she went to the doctor found out it was actually the water pills. She was swelling to the point that it was scary.
Dr Oz explained that what she was describing is actually called the rebound effect. He said that by taking the pills and losing the three pounds of water, when you stop taking the pills, not only will you get the three pounds back, but the rebound effect will cause you to become overwhelmed with fluid.
Dr Oz: Water Pill Warning
Natasha said she would actually tell her friends to use her as an example for why not to use the pills. She said to lose weight the natural way and the right way instead.
Dr Oz said he was angered by duplicitous people taking advantage of people, and said to not be conned by water pills.
