Dr Oz: Natural Remedies & Holistic Medicine
Right away Dr. Oz was ready to delve into the topic of holistic medicine, and he had transformed his set into a place where a bunch of different holistic medicine approaches were being put to the test. Dr. Oz explained that now, even modern medicine is accepting various holistic ways to heal your body. Dr. Oz welcomed Dr. Mao Shing Ni to his show, who explained that patients are now asking for the more natural remedies, as they are gravitating toward self-care.
Dr. Mao said the holistic treatments are different and generally focus on the patient and are wonderful for disease, whereas modern medicine focus more on disease and are very good for acute problems. He said the best approach is most commonly a combination of the two.

Dr. Oz first wanted to talk about a natural solution for lowering blood pressure, one of the most dangerous risk factors for heart disease. Most doctors treat high blood pressure with drugs, but there’s already a powerful natural remedy inside of you: CoQ10. CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant found in your heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas. It can also be made in a lab out of beets, sugar cane, and yeast. Doctors have started using CoQ10 to treat heart failure, angina, and elevated cholesterol. A major review of alternative medicine found it to be especially effective when treating hypertension.
Dr. Mao explained that sometimes CoQ10 can even lower your blood pressure by up to ten points, and it can be used in addition to the medicine they’re already taking to reduce the amount they need, or it can even be used in place of their medications. CoQ10 is Co-Enzyme Q10 and Dr. Oz explained that if you have high blood pressure, the blood vessels are constricting, and CoQ10 relaxes the blood vessels to make it easier for blood to pass through.
Dr. Mao said you can usually see results after taking the supplement for a month, but he recommends his patients take it up to about 3 months. If you have low blood pressure or take blood thinners, you shouldn’t take CoQ10. If CoQ10 is right for you, Dr. Oz recommends taking 200 mg at bedtime.
Dr Oz: Valerian Root For Anxiety
Next, Dr. Oz had a natural remedy for anxiety, mood, and sleep. Anxiety is the most common mental illness in this country and there are some incredible powerful drugs out there used to treat it. Doctors have been looking for a more natural solution for the 40 million people that suffer from anxiety, given that the prescriptions have strong side effects and could be addicting.
The answer is here and it’s Valerian. Valerian is now shown to work in the brain in the same way as Xanax or Valium, increasing a chemical called Gaba, which has a calming effect on anxiety. Dr. Mao explained that Valerian root has been widely used in Europe and Asia for anxiety, nervousness, and sleep, and it’s really safe. He said it’s often referred to as “poor man’s Valium.”
Dr. Mao said if you have fatigue, you should see your doctor before taking anything. Valerian counteracts the anxiety and changes the chemicals in your brain to help you calm down. You can take Valerian root in pill form, drink it in a tea, or use a Valerian root extract. Dr. Oz suggested drinking one cup of tea before bed.
Dr Oz: Contrast Hydrotherapy For Chronic Pain
Dr. Oz then shared a treatment you can use for pain that can be done at home and won’t cost any money. It’s the healing power of water, and it can be most therapeutic when alternating hot and cold temperatures. Doctors and physical therapists are rediscovering the benefits of what’s called contract hydrotherapy to treat chronic pain, stiffness, and soft tissue injuries like carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and tendinitis. It’s believed it works to increase blood flow and reduce inflammation.
Dr. Mao explained that the best time to do it is about a day or two after an injury, and Dr. Mao said if you’re diabetic and can’t detect extreme changes in temperature, perhaps this treatment wouldn’t be best for you. He said you want extreme hot and cold that you can stand.
Dr Oz: Electroacupuncture Treatment
Finally, Dr. Oz had an alternative to acupuncture: electroacupuncture. It uses needles that generate gently electrical impulses to acupressure points. It’s been effectively used to treat pain, stress, and nausea. It’s painless, takes half the time, and can even be done with electrodes instead of needles.
Dr. Mao said the addition of electricity can improve results, and said to think of it as jumper cables. A mild current of electricity is involved, and it’s perfectly safe. Dr. Mao explained that the brain gets a signal from the stomach saying, “I want to throw up” and through electroacupuncture, they are blocking the signal from reaching the brain stem. He said the treatment lasts about 30 minutes, and for nausea and certain pains you could see an immediate results. They typically recommend 8-10 treatments and it’s safe for everyone except someone who wears a pacemaker.
