Dr Oz: Ease Your Back Pain
Dr Oz was excited to share that you can actually ease your own back pain at home, without pills. He welcomed a husband and wife team who said there are simple home remedies you can do at home that will provide you with relief. Dr Oz said a lot of people will go to extreme measures to relieve their own back pain. He showed video after video of people trying to crack their own backs and necks, with popping sounds going off left and right.
Dr Lori Smatt said, “Just because you hear a noise doesn’t mean you’re helping yourself.” She said you can actually be doing more harm than good because the noise you’re hearing is just from gas being released from the joint.
Dr Oz: Lower Back Pain Relief
One woman from the audience came down and shared that she had day-to-day normal back pain. She teaches young children so she’s constantly trying to get down on their level. Dr Smatt first explained what was called a spinal press. She had the woman lay down on her stomach, head laying to one side, with her arms straight down by her hips. She then instructed she bring her hands underneath her shoulder and press up onto her elbows. She suggested thinking about relaxing her lower spine, and holding that position for ten seconds. That exercise is specific for lower back pain to open up that area.
Dr Oz: Relieve Low Back Pain
Next, lay down on your back with your legs extended, and let your back relax into the floor. Bend both your knees, putting your feet flat on the ground, hip width apart. Tuck your pelvis a bit and then pull your knees up toward your shoulders. Then roll side to side “like a bowling ball.” This also helps with low back tension and muscle spasms. Slowly bring your feet back down and then repeat.
Dr Oz: Exercise To Relieve Neck Pain
Next, if you suffer from neck pain, you want to stand with your hands behind your head. Interlace your fingers and pull your abdomen in. Press your head back into your hands and “resist the push” and then release. Do this a few times to help stretch your neck. Dr Michael Smatt said constantly leaning forward can cause “text neck,” which causes tension in your neck. This exercise can bring back the natural curve of the spine.
Dr Oz: Happy Hummingbird Exercise
Finally, Dr Oz wanted to look at an exercise called “the happy hummingbird.” To do this exercise, stand with your arms straight out to the side, bent at the elbow, and then roll your shoulder blades back in a circular motion before leaning to the side doing the same thing.
Dr Smatt if you try all these exercises and other home remedies and the pain persists, it’s time to see a chiropractor. Do you have any go-to exercises or stretches for relieving back pain?
Dr Oz: Chew Gum To Get a Catchy Song Out of Your Head
At the end of his show, Dr Oz shared that research found that chewing gum can actually help you get that repetitive song out of your head. Next time there’s a song replaying in your mind that you don’t want to be there, try to chomping on some chewing gum!
