Dr Oz: Amaranth Superfood Grain
The Amaranth plant can grow six feet tall. The grain’s small seeds make it ideal to use in recipes that call for other grains, such as:
- Barley
- Oats
- Rye
- Wheat
“All the cooking that you normally do can be done differently if you know how to use it,” Dr Oz said.
Dr Oz: Amaranth Oatmeal Swap
Mary Ellen taste tested Dr Oz’s Amaranth, which he boiled and mixed with milk as a creamy, nutty oatmeal substitute. She agreed that she would try the great-tasting swap as a breakfast option.
Dr Oz: Amaranth Nutrients
What makes Amaranth such a superfood grain? Dr Oz said it has more protein, fiber, and calcium than other grains like brown rice, oats, and millet.
Fiber is good for keeping your bowel movements regularly, and Mary Ellen was proud to say she had been following Dr Oz’s advice about fiber in a diet.
Dr Oz: Amaranth Cholesterol Benefits
Doctor Oz said that new data also concludes Amaranth is beneficial for lowering cholesterol, which could be an alternative to medication.
High cholesterol foods such as pasta or sausage can bring up the cholesterol level in your body. Amaranth helps to block cholesterol from being absorbed into the body, canceling out some of our high cholesterol indulgences.
