Dr Oz: Low-Calorie Potato Chip Tricks
Dr Oz and food journalist Mark Schatzker took a closer look at baked potato chips to find out if they were really a healthy option for those wanting something salty and crunchy to munch on. Mark revealed that companies are actually using tricks to make consumers eat more chips.
Dr Oz: Chemical & Artificial Flavorings In Chips
First, companies use chemical and artificial flavorings in their products to make them taste more like the real thing, as well as to make you want to eat more. According to Mark, the synthetic flavorings are so powerful, they can make the food taste even better than the real thing. Mark had Dr Oz take a closer look at fake cheese flavoring and the real thing to see if he could distinguish between them. Dr Oz admitted they both smelled really good but correctly guessed the real cheese.
One of the hallmarks of food addiction is cravings that can’t be satisfied. Mark believes additives like artificial flavorings could be to blame. When you look on label, look for the words “flavorings” or “natural flavorings” in order to spot chemicals in fake foods.
Dr Oz: Salt Makes You Eat More At Meals
The next chip trick companies are using is adding more salt. A recent study found that simply adding more salt to food encourages people to consume up to 11% more in a single meal. Ifyou’re eating 11% more at each meal, you could gain 25-30 pounds over the course of a year, just from adding salt! Baked chips actually have more salt than regular, fried chips!

Dr Oz: Healthier Looking Snack Packaging
Of course, companies use a fairly obvious but relatively unknown trick to get consumers to eat food that they believe is healthy, when it actually isn’t. They turn to creative packaging and use specific images and colors to make you think you’re choosing a healthier product, when you’re really not. Dr Oz set up a station before the show and asked audience members to vote which bag they thought was healthier. Approximately 78% chose the bag that was the exact same except it was green. It turns out, the contents were the exact same!
