Dr Oz: Healthier Potato Chip Alternative: North Fork Potato Chips

Dr Oz: North Fork Potato Chips

Are you craving a salty, crunchy potato chip without all the guilt? You’re in luck because food journalist Mark Schatzker may have found the solution. Mark visited a local potato farm to find America’s healthiest chip. Low-calorie potato chips may be tasty, but they have nothing on the potato chips at North Fork Potato Chips. Located at the northern tip of Long Island, North Fork is one of only three farms in the country that grow and fry their own potatoes.

Husband and wife Martin and Carol Sidor are the owners. Martin is in charge of growing and harvesting the potatoes and he believes its the variety of potatoes they choose that make for the greatest potato. The soil and weather conditions in Long Island make for the best potato for the best potato chips. Carol is in charge of turning those potatoes into “crispy slices of perfection.”

According to Carol, they use no preservatives, their chips are lightly salted, and they use sunflower oil, which is a healthy oil. Carol also believes in terms of allowing the actual potato flavor to come through, sunflower oil is the way to go. Potatoes are sliced, fried in good oil for ten minutes, a little salt is added, and then you’re left with the best potato chip around. Dr Oz pointed out that they’re not exactly “pretty” chips but they taste naturally delicious, like potato chips should.

The bottom line is that potato trips are a treat that shouldn’t be eaten every day, but when you do eat them, eat the ones that are as close to the real thing as possible.

In the mean time, you can make your own potato chips in the microwave. Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Carefully cut a potato into thin slices
  2. Put the slices into cold water then rinse until the water says clear
  3. Dry the slices with paper towels
  4. Arrange the slices on top of paper towels on a plate
  5. Drizzle with a little olive oil
  6. Add a pinch of salt
  7. Put the plate in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes
  8. Flip the chips over then cook three more minutes at 50% power
  9. Repeat at 50% until golden
  10. Store in an air-tight container
