Dr Oz: Is Gluten Bad For You? Should I Give Up Gluten?

Dr Oz: YouTube Star Nick Uhas

According to YouTube sensation Nick Uhas, Doritos are so flammable, you can actually use a bunch of them to cook a steak. It turns out, the steak was pretty delicious, especially considering it tasted like Doritos! Nick joined Dr Oz to discuss some of the most controversial ingredients found in the food we eat.

For example, another surprisingly flammable food is non-dairy coffee creamer. They’re used for pyrotechnics out in Los Angeles to blow things up! All that aside, Dr Oz wanted Nick to weigh in on one of the most controversial food ingredients these days: gluten.

Dr Oz: What Is Gluten? Is Gluten Bad For You?

In a hilarious viral video, Nick went around to complete strangers asking if things like cars, tennis rackets, and more were gluten-free. He joked that he felt like asking if something was gluten free was just a good idea. But what exactly is gluten and is it bad for you?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale. Gluten is what allows pasta and dough to keep its shape, acting like a glue. It’s found in everything from beer and baked goods to food coloring and salad dressings. But is gluten really bad for you? In 2013, 1/3 of Americans were actively trying to eliminate gluten from their diets, although only 1% of Americans have Celiac Disease, which is the disease that makes gluten toxic. Some people, however, can have a sensitivity to gluten, without having full-blown Celiac Disease, but it can be difficult to diagnose. So should you consider going gluten-free?

Dr Oz: Should You Give Up Gluten?

It turns out, if you don’t have a gluten sensitivity or you don’t have Celiac disease, you’re fine to just go with whole grains. But if you do have a gluten sensitivity or Celiac disease you’re better off avoiding gluten because it can make you feel pretty bad. If you cut out gluten without needing to, you’re missing out on a diet that is rich in whole grains, low in fats, and loaded with nutrients.
