Dr Oz welcomed Dr Michael Roizen who gave up dairy 21 years ago after his wife struggled with his gas. He explained that you don’t need dairy, you just need the nutrients in it. He wanted to help Karen get rid of the dairy to ease her symptoms, and then possibly ease it back into her diet. Dr Oz said he knows we’ve been told that dairy is good for us, and it is, but a lot of people are better off on a dairy-free lifestyle. He had a plan that could greatly improve many people’s lives.
Dr Oz: Eliminate Dairy
The first step of the plan is to eliminate all dairy for two weeks. Dr Roizen said that you need to keep a log of everything you eat and the symptoms you get afterward, whether it’s cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, diarrhea, postnasal drip, or headaches. As you take the dairy away, you should get rid of those symptoms as well. After two weeks, if you’re free of symptoms, you can start to add it back in a little at a time.
Dr Oz: Add Dairy Back In
The next step of the dairy sensitivity plan is that after those two weeks are over, you can add in a half cup of dairy per day to your diet. Dr Roizen explained that they want you to start with hard cheese because it has less lactose in it. If you don’t have symptoms in the first week, then you can go and add in another half cup the second week. What you need to determine is your threshold and how much of certain types of dairy you can have before you start experiencing the symptoms.
Dr Oz: Calcium & Vitamin D From Non-Dairy Sources
The final step is to get the resources from non-dairy sources. Dr Roizen suggested eating one cup of non-dairy calcium. He said dark green leafy vegetables have a lot of calcium as well as figs, beans, and almonds. It’s hard to get vitamin D unless you’re out in the sun, so they suggest taking a supplement of 1,000 IU of vitamin D a day.
Dr Roizen then shared cupcakes made with cocoa powder and without any dairy and said there are actually a lot of recipes out there that taste delicious and don’t include dairy.
