Dr Oz: Bean Health Effects
Beans are often hailed as a healthy superfood, but Dr Oz revealed that they can also have some surprising consequences. Find out what they are and how you can avoid Food Poisoning, High Blood Pressure, and more bean-related problems.
Dr Oz: What Beans Cause Migraines?
Dr Oz’s guest, Dr Janet Brill, is the author of Blood Pressure Down. She said that Beans can cause Migraines in some patients. Who knew?

There are particular beans that seem to have this effect, such as Fava Beans, Garbanzo Beans, and Navy Beans.
On the other hand, Black Beans do not pose this risk and are a cancer fighter. Dr Oz suggested eating 1/2 cup Black Beans three times per week.
Dr Oz: Beans, Sodium & Blood Pressure
Though you might expect beans to lower your Blood Pressure, Dr Brill and Dr Oz explained that the opposite could be true. That’s because many people get their beans from a can.
Canned beans, just like canned soups, can have high sodium content. Dr Brill recommended choosing a low sodium canned bean. That way, you can get the cardiovascular and cholesterol benefits without the blood pressure consequences.
If you have a lot of free time to spend in the kitchen, you can avoid salt altogether by making your own dried beans.
Dr Oz: Beans Food Poisoning?
Dr Oz said that you can get food poisoning from beans. I never would have guessed that. This can lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
You might never suspect that beans are the cause. Dr Oz said that beans with the protein Lectin, such as Red Kidney Beans, are likely to cause this type of poisoning if they are undercooked.
Raw beans need to be cooked for one to three hours to avoid this problem (which is probably why so many of us eat canned beans). Alternately, Dr Brill said you can soak the beans overnight and then make them in a pressure cooker, which would only take about 12 minutes.
Dr Oz: Eat Beans Without Gas
Beans are a great health food, but they are known for causing gas. Dr Oz and Dr Brill shared some tips to avoid this issue.
Try adding Kombu, a dried Japanese seaweed, to the cooking water for your beans. Another way you can prevent gas is by speed soaking beans in a pressure cooker with a tablespoon of Baking Soda. Just two minutes of speed soaking will do the trick to prevent gas!
