Dr Oz: The Man Who Tested Every Diet
Are you a habitual dieter? Do you try all the trendy programs that come on the market? It seems like that would be impossible, because new plans are coming out all the time. But one man made it his quest to try almost every diet out there.
AJ Jacobs wrote the book on fitness, literally. It’s called Drop Dead Healthy, and it follows this man’s quest to experiment with a variety of diets, nutrition plans, and health products to find the ones that get the best results. He was open to everything, and now he’s ready to share what he learned.
Doctor Oz: Meet AJ Jacobs
He calls himself a human lab rat, and he fully commits to his experiments. His previous books have chronicled his experiences of following the literal teachings of the Bible to attempting to read the entirety of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (may it rest in peace).
You might not know it to look at him now, but AJ said he was once completely unhealthy and out of shape. His wife encouraged him to do something about it, so he tried all the extreme diets on the market, from The Caveman to juice cleanses.
One thing AJ noticed is that being healthy is a full time job, and it squeezes out time for doing a lot of the other things we enjoy. I can agree with this. But according to him, there are products and solutions out there that simplify the process, making it affordable in terms of both time commitment and cost.
Dr Oz: Paleo Diet & Blood Type Diet
AJ was initially resistant to getting in shape, and couldn’t see the point of all this work. He mentioned the story of a professional runner who died of a heart attack in his 50s. These days AJ says he realizes that getting in shape can help you be happier and healthier in all aspects of your life.
Though he has tried countless diets, including the Paleo Diet and the Blood Type Diet, he said the best solution he has found is a combination of several different plans and strategies.
Dr Oz: Shop The Grocery Perimeter
AJ Jacobs shared his first diet tip: Shop the perimeter of your grocery store. That’s where the produce and unprocessed fish will be. Most of the products in the middle of the store are processed junk foods that will pack on calories.

AJ Jacobs: Eating From The Rainbow
He also incorporated a vegan philosophy into his diet plan, known as eating from the rainbow. That means choosing a variety of colorful foods that are red, yellow, blue, and green. These types of healthy foods will have antioxidants as well as many other health benefits.
How To Eat Like A Baby
AJ’s next tip is to eat like a baby. Before you reach for those tiny jars of pureed baby food, listen up. The real strategy here is eating from a smaller, child size plate. You can also start using smaller utensils. The result is that you’ll be eating less, and eating slower, than typical adults.
AJ Jacobs: Eat Apples To Fight Cravings
Apples have many uses, but among them is controlling the appetite. Some studies find that you can cut hundreds of calories out of your day by eating an apple before a meal. It fills you up, and soup works the same way.
Dr Oz: Why You Should Squat Over The Toilet
Did you know that you are probably going to the bathroom all wrong? South Park recently pondered whether we should be facing the other direction when sitting on the toilet. Though that’s not what Dr Oz recommended, you can reap the health benefits of streamlining your bathroom routine.
AJ Jacobs revealed that our bodies are designed to go to the bathroom in a squatting position, meaning that our toilets are set too low. Squatting helps you move waste faster, reduce the chance of getting hemorrhoids, and even work your leg muscles in the process.
Weight Loss Benefits of Fidgeting
Fidgeting burns calories. That means it’s OK to tap your toes or shift around in your seat throughout the workday. In fact, you can burn up to 300 calories in a day. The next time my boyfriend complains that I can’t sit still, I’ll just tell him I’m working out.
Doctor Oz: AJ Jacobs Weight Loss Diet Results
Just two years ago, AJ Jacobs weighed in at 172 pounds, with 18% body fat and an LDL Cholesterol (that’s the bad one) level of 77. Now, he is at 156.5 pounds, with only 7% body fat. His LDL level is down to 62, and he’s no longer on medication to manage his Cholesterol.
AJ said there are other benefits to getting fit. He’s also swapped out his coffee habit, trading in the French press of healthier filtered coffee.
Dr Oz: Sports Drink Spit Technique
You can give yourself an energy boost by taking a drink of a sports beverage, then spitting it out. Your tongue will tell the body it’s getting the sugar rush, but you won’t be taking in the extra calories. Dr Oz said this strategy has been backed by scientific research.
Dr Oz: Chewdaism Review
AJ Jacobs said that Americans don’t spend enough time chewing their food. Chewing each bite 20 times instead of 10 means you’re getting more heart health benefits while also eating less.
Dr Oz: Didgeridoo
The Australian Didgeridoo is a real instrument, not simply a movie prop. Did you know that blowing into one of these instruments can actually keep you from snoring or having other sleep problems at night? Another option to strengthen the throat muscles is a Kazoo, which is probably much more affordable.
