Dr Oz: Liver Cancer Research
Dr Oz found an inspiring story of another young scientist who is interested in Cancer Research. Elana Simon recently turned 18, and six years before that, she was diagnosed with a rare form of Liver Cancer. Find out how she is using her experience as a learning tool to help others.
Dr Oz: Elana Simon Cancer Research

Teen scientist Elana Simon shared her research on Pediatric Liver Cancer with Dr Oz. She wanted to learn more about the disease she was diagnosed with.
Elana Simon told Dr Oz that she was lucky to have her cancer detected in an early stage, so that it could be surgically removed. In the aftermath, she wanted to learn more about her condition and why so little was actually known about it.
She began doing lab research, and along the way, she made a remarkable discovery that she thinks should give hope to others who are diagnosed with Cancer.
Dr Oz: Pediatric Liver Cancer Genetic Mutation
Dr Oz showed Elana what a real human liver looks like, and together they compared it to another, which had Liver Cancer and was very discolored. Mutated cells seen on the diseased organ were actually a critical part of Elana’s story.
When she looked for similarities among 15 pediatric Liver Cancer cases, what she was able to conclude is that there was a split in the DNA cells that later reconnected, but was instrumental in fostering the growth of this cancer.
Dr Oz: Teen Scientist Elana Simon’s Cancer Research
At first, Elana said that she was reluctant to draw conclusions and unsure about the validity of what she found. But further examination, testing, and research confirmed that she was on to something that could be very helpful for patients and their medical teams in the future.
Dr Oz said that one of the joys in science is making such an incredible discovery. He brought Elana’s father, Sandy, onstage, and Sandy said he would have understood if his daughter had never wanted to know more about her cancer after being treated and cured.
But he is very proud of what she managed to accomplish thanks to her health and curiosity. What’s next for Elana? She will be attending Harvard, and Dr Oz gave her a laptop case to help with her studies.
#OzPrank on Husbands
At the end of the show, Dr Oz shared some responses that women got when they pranked their husbands and boyfriends with fake details about new diets from Dr Oz.
The men said that they would never give up favorite snacks, that Dr Oz must hate husbands, and that they should not watch the show anymore. Have you pulled an #OzPrank yet? Share it on social media, and be sure to use the hashtag.
