Dr Oz: Build Up Your Willpower
Dr. Oz was talking to three identical triplets who claim they have no willpower, making it incredibly difficult for them to lose weight. He said if you’ve ever struggled with willpower, your struggle ends today because he brought Kelly McGonigal, author of The Willpower Instinct, to his show, who is a twin herself.
Kelly explained that a lot of people think of willpower solely as the ability to resist temptation, and she refers to that as “I won’t power.” She said you also need “I will power” which is the ability to do things like get on the treadmill, and “I want power” which is identifying your goals. Dr. Oz said he wanted to share how to make what is designed to work for the triplets, work more effectively.
Dr Oz: Brush Your Teeth With Non-Dominant Hand
Kelly said the first thing she wanted the woman to do every morning was to brush their teeth with their non-dominant hand, and do that for two weeks. Kelly said it’s a willpower workout and helps you start your day by putting your brain into a state of willpower. Kelly said it may sound ridiculous, but you should also think about your individual goals while you do it. She said studies have shown that people who do it find it easier to make healthier choices throughout the day.
The next thing you can do to build up your willpower is to wait 10 minutes before giving in to any temptation. Kelly and Dr. Oz explained that because their number one goal is to lose weight, they should look at temptations now like a window that is closing. Kelly said temptations hijack your brain and studies show if you can distance yourself from the temptation for ten minutes, it can help you remember your goal.
Dr Oz: Create A Good Habit
Dr. Oz then showed the three women that he brought Diane’s actual treadmill onto the set. Kelly suggested she spend ten minutes per day on the treadmill, explaining that she shouldn’t think about whether it’s long enough to help her achieve her weight loss goal, but instead focus on creating a habit.
Lastly, Kelly wanted the women to make their willpower successes contagious, so every day they should call or text one another to share their achievements and acknowledge each other’s strengths.
