Dr Oz: Snoring Affecting Couple
Dr Oz introduced his viewers to a couple who says her snoring is bad for his health. She shared that her snoring is so bad, sometimes she’ll even wake herself up. She’s tried a few home remedies, such as putting peppermint oil on her chest or sleeping on a certain side, but nothing seems to stop the snoring. Her husband said that Deja has been snoring for about two years and it’s ruining his sleep.
He said Deja goes to bed before him, so by the time he goes to bed she’s already snoring. To block out the noise, he’ll use a pillow on either side of his head as earmuffs, and sometimes he’ll tap her in order to stop the snoring enough to bide some time for him to go to sleep. He also said that he’ll wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep, even though sometimes it’s 4 or 5 a.m.
He said he lives on coffee and goes through about two energy drink shots a day. He constantly feels sluggish so so he’ll take catnaps in the afternoon. Deja has offered numerous times to go downstairs and sleep on the couch, but he says he just can’t sleep without her. “It’s an evil trade-off,” he said.
Dr Oz: What Is Sleep Apnea?
His name is Paul and Deja said she’s worried about him a lot. Paul said he’s worried the snoring is a sign of a bigger problem. Deja said she’ll wake up and her head will feel heavy and she’ll even go into sneezing fits.
Paul said he suffers from asthma so he knows what it’s like to not get enough oxygen. He’s worried that’s what’s happening to his wife. Dr Oz explained that sleep apnea is when you start to suffocate when you’re snoring. He said the snoring will actually stop and you’ll have periods of time, sometimes as long as 10 seconds, where you practically stop breathing.
Dr Oz: Disturbed Sleep From Snoring
Dr Oz then turned to the Truth Tube, explaining that he sent Deja home with a device to track her sleep to find out if she had sleep apnea, which is a treatable but dangerous condition. The good news is that she doesn’t have sleep apnea.
Dr Oz then explained that he was able to obtain some real audio of Deja snoring, so while Deja wore a device, so did Paul, so that they could track his sleep . They found that the more Deja snored, the less Paul slept. Dr Oz shared that Paul had three sleep disturbances, meaning he woke up three times during the night because of snoring.
Dr Oz: Negative Effects Of Snoring
Paul said he thought his sleep came in intervals, and guessed he slept six hours overall. In actuality, Paul was only getting four hours and 28 minutes of sleep. Dr Oz said there are a lot of problems that can arise from not getting enough sleep, and Paul and Deja are already dealing with some of those issues.
Dr Oz said he wanted to share a plan with the couple that would finally take care of their problem.
