Dr Oz: What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Have you or anyone you known ever had severe joint pain coupled with rashes and bloating? If you have seen these symptoms before, it could be due to a medical mystery doctors are trying to find a solution to. Dr. Oz said the symptoms are for a disease called Leaky Gut Syndrome and Dr. Oz talked with one mother who has been on a quest to end her son’s pain from this terrible disease.
Dr Oz: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis vs Leaky Gut Syndrome
Most doctors have never heard of Leaky Gut Syndrome, let alone know the best method for treating the disease. Susannah Meadows is a mother who is determined to change that forever. She used to work as an investigative reporter for the New York Times magazine, so she thought it would not be that hard to find out what was wrong with her son Shepherd after he started complaining of joint pain in his knees. She took him to the pediatrician where tests were performed and a specialist diagnosed him with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.
Susannah said the doctors told her without treatment her son would have permanent joint damage which could lead to a disability. She told Dr. Oz she remembered thinking there was nothing she could do to stop the pain, even after her sister mentioned alternative medicine, saying she didn’t want to talk with a “kook.”
Methotrexate: Chemotherapy Drug Used To Relieve Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Shepherd was put on anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDS), but the medication did not help and the arthritis began to spread. Doctors decided the next best thing to do was put him on a powerful drug called Methotrexate. This chemotherapy drug has potentially dangerous side effects, but Susannah knew it was the only medication that could help his pain.
Dr Oz: Leaky Gut Syndrome Symptoms
After some time, Susannah started feeling troubled by having to give her son such a dangerous drug as Methotrexate, which led her to calling a doctor her sister suggested. The doctor began to describe the symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome to her, and she said they were spot on what her son was going through.
Dr. Oz explained the theory behind Leaky Gut Syndrome is that damage in the intestines causes bacteria and toxins to leak out into the body and begin to cause symptoms like joint pain, rashes, bloating or even depression.
Dr Oz: Diet Change Cures Leaky Gut Syndrome
Susannah decided the only thing she could do was give alternative medicines a try. She removed gluten and dairy from her son’s diet and limited his sugar intake. She also eliminated potatoes and tomatoes while adding more Omega-3s, Montmorency cherry juice and a probiotic to his diet. Susannah said she also gave Shepherd a Chinese herbal concoction every day, but the conventional doctor was skeptical. Shepherd’s doctor gave Susannah the go-ahead to try the dietary treatment for six weeks as long as she agreed to also continue with the medications prescribed to her son.
Susannah told Dr. Oz her son’s symptoms began getting worse and worse which led the doctor to recommend a higher dose of medicine, but she insisted on continuing with the lower dosage and continuing with the alternative medicine as well. She promised the doctor if nothing was better after six weeks, she would do whatever he thought was best.
After six weeks to the day, Shepherd was able to get out of bed all by himself, something he couldn’t do before, and told her his knees did not hurt anymore. Susannah was happy to share that Shepherd is now medication-free and without pain.
Dr Oz: Conventional Medicine vs Alternative Medicine
Susannah told Dr. Oz she isn’t certain what cured her son since he was taking the Methotrexate and following an alternative health plan. But in her heart she told Dr. Oz she believes it was the dietary changes she made to her son’s diet. Dr. Oz added that there is something of a war going on with our health today because of the constant battle between conventional medicine and alternative medicine. Dr. Oz said conventional doctors don’t have enough knowledge of alternative medicine, meaning they should never shoot down the possibility of curing a diseases with alternative medicines.
Dr. Robynne Chutkan, a gastroenterologist, agreed with Dr. Oz that many patients who could be benefiting from alternative medicine are not. Dr. Chutkan added that Leaky Gut Syndrome is becoming more common and all disease begins in the gut, especially those that are autoimmune in nature.
