Dr. Oz: Oral Cancer Caused by HPV
We heard about the HPV Cervical Cancer link on the show. Now Dr. Oz said the number one cause of oral cancer is HPV. Before we had thought it was from smoking and drinking, but in recent years HPV has been exposed as the real culprit.
Dr. Jennifer Ashton said the alarming rise is probably because there has been a lot more research done surrounding HPV. Dentists and oral surgeons have been seeing more lesions that are being tested positive for cancer and HPV.
Dr. Oz: How to Prevent HPV
A woman in the audience, Helen, asked how HPV could be prevented.
Dr. Ashton said she hears this question all the time. She said in all her years working as a gynecologist she has never seen it used, but said it is like putting a piece of plastic to protect from any moisture transfer between parties.
Dr. Diane Harper said she tells tells her patients to enjoy whatever they want to do. But they must try to be careful and make sure to see doctors and other medical professionals to make sure both partners are staying healthy, despite the activities.
Dr. Oz: What Cancers Are Associated With HPV?
Dr. Oz said a number of cancers are associated with HPV:
- Cervical cancer
- Oral Cancer
- Vulvar Cancer
- Penile Cancer
- Vaginal Cancer
- Anal Cancer
Dr. Oz also said 7 out of the 10 vaginal cancers are related to HPV, and 8 out 10 anal cancers are HPV related. Remember, it is a skin to skin contact virus.
