Dr. Oz: What Happens To Us After We Die?
Dr. Oz kicked off his episode by talking about what happens to us after we die. He talked to an investigative journalist who has interviewed almost 100 people who have died and come back to life with new memories. She calls these people Death Travelers. Judy Bachrach was terrified of death before her series of interviews. As a journalist, she sometimes saw dead bodies and they terrified her, because they reminded her of her own death. When her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she decided to confront her fears.
“I needed to find out what would happen to my mother,” she said.

She talked to nearly 100 people whose stories were so profound and remarkably similar that it changed her mind on what really happens when we die.
Dr. Oz: Death Travelers
Judy said she calls these people Death Travelers because she used to think death was emptiness. Now, she’s heard about these people’s adventures in the afterlife. She said their stories are all unique, but they all have striking similarities. Many of them encounter other beings, either human beings who have died or spiritual beings. Many achieve wisdom or look back on their life and are ashamed by what they’ve done wrong. But almost everybody finds peace and happiness.
Dr. Oz: Life After Death Stories
David drowned in 1983 in very rough waters. He said he experienced his future. He knew that someday he would have cancer and he would survive the cancer. He also saw he could live beyond the cancer. A light told him it wasn’t his time and so he knew he had to return. In 2000, he learned he had lung cancer that had metastasized into his spine. They told him they could make him comfortable, but they had to let him pass because there wasn’t anything they could do. But after six months, he was cancer-free.
William shared his story in a pre-taped video. William’s heart stopped three times and three times, doctors brought him back to life. William believes when he died he went into outer space and he saw lines connecting all the planets and stars and he saw how they connected to him. He felt what he calls “love energy”. Then he realized his mother would be in pain if he died, so he knew he had to come back. He believes he saw heaven.
Tika died during a violent attack. She saw a bright light and felt very free. When she woke up, her vocal cords were damaged, her face was swollen, and the blood vessels in her eyes were broken. She said she wasn’t sure what happened, but she knew she wasn’t afraid of death anymore after that.
Dr. Oz: Science Explains The Afterlife
Dr. Oz said that science can explain some of what happens to the Death Travelers. When the body nears death, the breathing slows and the heart stops beating. The brain starts to die, but when the person comes back, parts of the brain recover faster than others. Scientists believe that this is what causes the out of body sensations.
Dr. Andrew Newberg has spent 20 years studying this phenomenon. He calls it neural theology, where science and spirit meet. He said that these death experiences can be explained by a range of things, from biology to spirituality. He said science can explain some things, but it has trouble with others. For instance, William knew he’d survive cancer and then 17 years later, survived cancer in a very unusual way.
Dr. Newberg also said that it doesn’t seem to matter how a person dies. Many people come back with these sorts of experience.
Judy Bachrach’s book is called Glimpsing Heaven.
