Before this episode, Dr Oz’s staff quizzed audience members about the contents of their purses. One woman, Michelle, had a lot of medication, including Antacids. She told him she takes two to 14 antacids every day for her heartburn, though they only give her temporary relief.
Doctor Oz told her this could be doing more harm than good, since antacids treat the symptoms but not the cause. Also, Heartburn can lead to other health problems, such as headaches, poor oral health, and sore throats.
Dr Oz: Heartburn Help
Dr Oz also set up a free Heartburn Help Clinic in Atlanta, Georgia, which drew in close to 1,000 patients. Patients shared their symptoms and explained how Heartburn interferes with their daily lives.
Bariatric Surgeon Dr James Butch Rosser and his colleagues provided free Gastroesophageal screenings at the event. One woman who thought she had Acid Reflux probably actually has a sinus problem. That means she’s been taking antacids to get relief from a condition she does not have.
Dr Oz: Western Diet Acidic Foods
Dr Rosser joined Dr Oz in the studio, where he said that the typical Western diet can aggravate heartburn, thanks to high fats and processed foods. These types of foods can introduce acids into our bodies that weaken the valve between stomach and esophagus, allowing acid to escape and travel elsewhere, which can lead to your Heartburn symptoms.
Hamburgers and Fried Chicken are just the tip of the iceberg. Other foods that promote Acid in the body include citrus, such as Grapefruit (even in juice form). Soft Drinks are another culprit. Fatty foods, such as Bacon, Peanut Butter, and even Dairy can cause flare-ups. You can also put Wine, Chocolate, Hot Sauce and Coffee on that list.
Dr Oz: Alkaline Foods Grocery List
On the other hand, Alkaline Foods can help you fight Acid Reflux naturally by using food. If you suffer from frequent Heartburn, you might need to get more of these:
- Apples
- Bananas
- Beans
- Carrots
- Chicken (not fried)
- Manuka Honey
- Mushrooms
- Pears
- Salmon
- Skim Milk
- Spinach
- Turkey
- Whole Grain Bread
Dr Oz: Alkaline Heartburn Diet Plan
These Alkaline Foods can help you naturally turn the tide against your Heartburn triggers. You can incorporate them all day long, starting with a Banana Smoothie for breakfast. At lunch, enjoy a Spinach salad.
You could snack on unbuttered Popcorn (flavor it using Parmesan and dill). For dinner, Shrimp Angel Hair Pasta is a good choice, but use olive oil and skip the butter or sauce.
Try to eat at least twice as many Alkaline Foods as you do Acidic Foods. Dr Rosser was confident that this plan could help the majority of Heartburn sufferers. If you break the rules, just go right back to the plan afterwards.
