Deep in the Amazon rainforest, there is a storm brewing. The Waorani tribe is testing their spears for sharpness and their blow guns for accuracy in preparation to face any intruders on the eight million acres of land that their government is ready to auction off for oil drilling. The drilling has been ordered by Ecuador’s government, whose economic well-being depends heavily on oil.

Boston biology professor Kelly Swing, who has been studying the landscape and getting to know the tribes over a 20 year course, says America, one of the largest importers of oil from Ecuador, shares part of the blame for this problem.

On Today, Mark Bittman talked about his new vegan diet plan, VB6.

It is not just the drilling going on here that is the big problem. More oil has been spilled in this forest during drilling than was spilled during the Exxon Valdez disaster, destroying any land that it touched.

The tribesman are devout in their readiness to fight for their land. Angry tribesman and women alike are preparing themselves to defend their land at any cost. They see little difference between the survival of their people and the survival of the forest. Kelly Swing sees this as not just an issue of saving the forest, but as a human rights issue as well – a topic that he feels is never acknowledge until people start dying.

Today Show: Mark Bittman Vegan Before 6 & VB6 Vegan Diet Review

Mark Bittman, a New York Times columnist, has a new diet plan to sell you – Vegan Before 6 (VB6). The rules are simple – change the proportions of the things you are eating and incorporate more plants during the day, and then eat whatever you want at night.

Bittman showed off the average day for himself:

  • Breakfast: Breakfast pilaf , a mixture of brown rice, apples, rice pilaf, spices, and ginger, cooked for a half an hour.
  • Lunch: creamed mushrooms on toast, with pureed white beans serving as the cream, and mushrooms and parsley acting as other toppings – put on whole grain bread.
  • Snack: Spiked guacamole, a traditional guacamole dip mixed with radish, tomatoes, scallion, lettuce, and jalapenos  with whole grain tortilla chips.
