Today Show: Natalie Morales At the ABBA Museum
Willie Geist was joined by Billy Bush and Kit Hoover from Access Hollywood Live, as well as four-time Tony nominated actress Vanessa Williams for the Take 3 on the Today Show May 7 2013. Just like yesterday, the Take 3 today was a bit of a letdown. Take 1 was that Al Roker and Natalie Morales weren’t there. Natalie Morales was in Sweden checking out the new ABBA museum and Al Roker went over to The Voice to go behind the scenes of the show. He was joined there by Savannah Guthrie. Carson Daly went over and talked to them during the live show. Willie Geist, who has apparently never watched The Voice, said he thought it was amazing to watch “16, 17 and 18-year-olds stepping onto live television” and nailing it. Most of the contestants on The Voice are older than that. Although two of the contestants are in their teens (Danielle Bradbery is 16 and Caroline Glaser is 19), everyone else is at least in their twenties. But I do agree with him that it is amazing how well these people do. Danielle Bradbery, for example, had her first performance ever at the blind auditions and she does great every time.
But Al Roker also pointed out that the coaches are a big part of the contestants’ success. Usher actually took his team into a gym and helped them work on their stamina by having them sing while they worked out. That was definitely really cool to watch. I think Usher has the strongest team, too, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the show moves along.
Vanessa Williams: Heart Disease Awareness
Vanessa Williams, whose recent role on The Trip To Bountiful on Broadway garnered acclaim (the play itself earned four Tony nominations), came by to talk about the importance of aspirin for women. Vanessa Williams said that heart disease is the number one killer of women and she wanted to raise awareness of the issue. She’s part of a campaign called Handbags For Hearts. The campaign basically is to make sure women carry aspirin in their handbags. The symptoms for a heart attack for women are different than the symptoms for men. Men have the shooting pain down the arm, but for women, it’s nausea, feeling faint and sweating. Vanessa Williams said if you take an aspirin at the onset of a heart attack it can help save your heart long enough for the EMTs to get there.
Punk Rock Gala
Take 3 was the weirdest one yet. I’m pretty sure Sid Vicious would be completely confused by this. There was a gala recently where all the stars were wearing punk-inspired fashions, including Sarah Jessica Parker, who wore a Mohawk hat. Kim Kardashian wore a floral neck-to-ankle long-sleeved dress. Madonna came without pants. And Nicole Richie came with her hair dyed gray. The anchors then debated whether gray hair was fashionable for younger women, which I think missed the point of punk rock. But then, the whole gala kind of missed the point, too.
