Today Show: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella On Broadway

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella debuted on Broadway this week and the Today Show’s Savannah Guthrie said it was absolutely amazing. The play is based off the 1950s movie of Cinderella starring Julie Andrews, which is a bit different from the Cinderella story we may all be accustomed to.

Guthrie said this play is not the same story as the Disney version of Cinderella. She said this version is very “sassy” and it isn’t just for children either. Although the play is family-friendly, Guthrie said the children are going to love the magic and the adults are going to love the play for humor.

The Today Show listened to a performance of “Do I Love You Because You Are Beautiful,” from the Broadway play Cinderella.

One of Guthrie’s favorite parts of the play was a “magical” dress change where a dress is literally made right before the audience’s eyes, in a matter of seconds and happens right out of thin air. Although the Today Show co-hosts were trying to get the secret out of the main actors in the play, Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana, both of them said it was simply magic that created the dress.

After introducing the play, Osnes and Fontana performed the song “Do I Love You Because You Are Beautiful,” in full costume. The song was actually really well done, and I thought it would be something I had heard before but it was a song that was not in the Disney version of Cinderella, admittedly the only version of Cinderella I have ever seen. The two actors really seemed fit for their parts and the embrace and kiss at the end of the song was truly captivating. Being able to fool the audience into thinking two actors have fallen in love is no easy feat.
