Today Show: Boston Band Dropkick Murphys

The Dropkick Murphys are one of the most influential bands in all of Boston. The band got their start in the basement of  a barber shop where they practiced. The band started out as a fun way to hang out with friends, but after people began responding to the music, they decided to start playing shows and recording records. But the band almost fell apart before it even began.

The band got their first big break when The Mighty Mighty Bosstones selected the band to tour with them and the tour eventually led to the band signing with Hellcat Records, but the dream of being a rockstar was not the dream lead singer Mike McColgan wanted to pursue. He quit the band after the first two years to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter.

Dropkick Murphys: St. Patrick’s Day In Boston

Although the band has hardly fixed up their beat up touring van since they first started using it when the band formed, lead singer Al Barr said they always make sure to get home for St. Patrick’s Day in Boston, an event they have been playing since the beginning. Barr said the band loves playing the St. Patrick’s Day shows because everyone from his three-year-old daughter to his 88-year-old grandma come out to watch them play.
