The Today Show talked with Deadliest Catch and Storage Wars creator Thom Beers about how he got into reality television and where he gets his show ideas.

Beers said his secret to success starts with danger in a far off place. Add some sort of competition, some cash incentives, a few close calls and top it all off with a lot of testosterone to get the fighting and yelling started and you have the recipe for a Thom Beers hit reality TV show.

“High risk, high reward and a great story is all you need,” Beers said.

Today Show: Reality TV Stars With Hollywood Agents

Beers’ shows have become so popular with the American audience, his reality stars have Hollywood agents now. And they are making some big money on TV. Thom Beers: Inspiration For Deadliest Catch

Beers, a four time college dropout, was working with a production crew in Alaska in 1999. He said they all got stuck on an Alaskan boat heading out into the worst storm in the past 40 years. Beers said there were 40 foot waves and the wind was blowing at 70 knots.

“I wasn’t scared,” said Beers. “I thought I was going to die. It was insanity.”

When Beers made it to land safely he said he was in such shock from the experience he could only grunt for the next 24 hours, but he had found the inspiration for his show Deadliest Catch.

Even after hitting 50, Beers is still hands on with many of the shows he has created. He narrates the action in some of the shows, he helps the crew when they need an extra hand and he has even taken a few punches during a reunion show.

Thom Beers: Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout? Review

In a reality TV world where it seems the Kardashians are the queens, you may be wondering why Beers hasn’t made a show for women. He said he could make a show for women, but it wouldn’t be very successful. Don’t count it out. It may happen in the future. Beers is constantly thinking up ideas for new shows, his newest show being Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?.

Beers said he always looks back on a quote he saw written on a ship in Alaska when he is thinking of new ideas. It reads “If you aren’t living on the edge, you are taking up too much space.”
