Return of The Voice: Judith Hill, Breakout Star

The reality program The Voice has spun its way back into the spotlight with the appearance of contestant Judith Hill. After a wonderful performance on Monday night, where each of the show’s judges vied to have the chance to mentor her, host Willie Geist got a chance to talk to the up-and-coming star about that night and about launching her career.

Like others before her, Judith signed up to participate on The Voice in the hopes of launching her singing career. But unlike those before her, this television show hasn’t been her first time working with stars. Before his untimely death four years ago, Judith was working as a backup singer for Michael Jackson, preparing to go with him on his world tour that had been planned for 2009.

The opportunity to work alongside Jackson provided Judith with much insight into a music career. When pressed to say what she learned the most from the superstar, she said, “Following [her] dreams.” In her opinion, Jackson, was a great example of someone who had made their dream happen, and that was a source of inspiration to her.

In the wake of his death, even though she was approached by a variety of agents and companies to start working on her own music career, she declined these offers.

“It was a very sensitive time,” Judith said. Out of respect to Jackson and the need for time to process, Judith stayed out of the music industry for some time, deciding to not capitalize on or exploit Jackson’s death.

This time off gave her a chance to grow as an artist over the past four years, and now she is ready to come out on the stage as a solo singer. However, Judith does find the transition from backup singer to solo singer to be scary, since you have to put yourself out there and be judged.

“I’m a very sensitive person,” Judith said. The judging process can be harsh, but from the acclaim that she is already getting, she has little to worry about.

In response to Adam Levine stating that he would light himself on fire in order to work with Judith after her performance, Judith has felt “overwhelmed and blessed for the chance to work with them.” Each of the coaches has revealed their admiration of Judith’s talent, and she has taken the rest of the world by storm.

Though all of the offers were tempting to Judith, she ultimately capitalized on Adam Levine as her mentor for the rest of this season on The Voice. This decision was influenced by her curiosity as to how their differing styles, with her soul background, would mingle together and create a new, very different kind of music.
