Today Show: Behind The Candelabra Review
The new HBO movie Behind The Candelabra recounts the story of the controversial six-year relationship between Liberace, played by Michael Douglas and his (much, much) younger lover, Scott Thorson, played by Matt Damon. Much of the movie is inspired by a 1998 book by Scott Thorson that was written about his relationship with Liberace.
The movie chronicles the beginning of Liberace and Scott Thorson’s relationship, the drug abuse, plastic surgery, and other controversies that made up their relationship, and their eventual 1982 breakup that led to Thorson suing Liberace for alimony, which was settled. Five years after the breakup, Liberace died due to complications from AIDS.
Today Show: Scott Thorson On Making Behind The Candelabra
Scott Thorson himself came on Today Show June 10 2013 to tell us his own story. Scott thought that they were right on target with Behind The Candelabra and depicted the relationship very accurately. He was also very happy to see how successful it has been thus far, as it is now playing all over the world.
He said that this was a very hard movie to produce and sell because of the touchy subject matter, but he eventually got HBO to get onboard with the movie in 2008.
Today Show: Scott Thorson And Liberace
Scott Thorson was 15 when he met Liberace, who was 40 years his senior. He thought that Liberace definitely took advantage of him, which he thinks played a part in his drug addiction and strange plastic surgery he underwent to look more like Liberace, which he got as a younger man at the request of Liberace. However, Scott had nothing but kind things to say about Liberace, and said the he still loved him.
Scott Thorson was recently in jail for drug problems, which are outlined in Behind The Candelabra, and he will be getting sentenced in July. Scott acknowledged this bump in the road, and thanked Dennis Hof of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch in Nevada for bailing him out of prison.
