Today Show In Boston: Mindy Kaling From Boston
Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer are both in Boston for the Today Show Friday Field Trip and the first person they ran into while in the city was Mindy Kaling, best known for her role as Kelly Kapoor on The Office. The Emmy nominated actress, writer and director grew up in Boston and still calls it home to this day. But you may never know it.
Kaling said she never developed the Boston accent even though she has hardly left the New England area since she was born. She did say she uses the word “wicked” more than any woman in their 30’s should and she even thinks the Boston accent can be kind of attractive for some reason but she wasn’t sure why.
Today Show: Mindy Kaling The Mindy Project
In Kaling’s latest role she plays Mindy Lahiri, a successful doctor who has a very complicated love life, in the show The Mindy Project. The show, created by Mindy Kaling, has her in the lead role as someone similar to Kaling in real life, although she said the fictional Mindy is a lot more fun than her.
Kaling said many of the quirky stories in the series come from the writers and their own personal dating stories, and she said the character was also inspired by her mother who is a OB/GYN.
Today Show: Mindy Kaling In The Office Finale?

Today Show: Hardcore Boston Fans
Kaling said she loves living in Boston and she couldn’t believe how hardcore the fans are in Boston. Almost everyone had been waiting since 3 a.m. to try and get to the front of the barricade where the Today Show was filming and she said it is typical of Boston fans. They are die-hard fans for the Celtics, the Red Sox and the Today Show.
Today Show: Great Boston Comedians
Before Mindy Kaling went on her way, the Today Show wanted to know what was in the water that made so many comedians come out of Boston. Kaling said it was a few things but mostly the cold keeping you inside and the terrible Boston drivers give everyone in the city a sense of humor.
