Today Show: The Smitten Kitchen
Three-year-old Jacob might not realize it yet but his mother is pretty famous on the internet. Deb Perelman started Smitten Kitchen years ago and she has grown to have thousands of followers who literally eat up every word she types as she gives them some of her best recipes.
Her blog is a wonderful maze of recipes complete with step-by-step photos for every recipe and a very relatable approach to food. Perelman said she doesn’t want it to be hard for people to cook. She wants to make cooking easy and she makes it seem as easy as ever even in her tiny New York City apartment. With just 40 square feet in her kitchen, Perelman said she does wish she had a bigger kitchen, and a refrigerator that doesn’t freeze everything in the back, but she knows how to make it work.
“It forces me to make food differently,” she said.
Today Show: Deb Perelman Has No Professional Chef Training
Perelman isn’t embarrassed of having no professional training as a chef because it has trained her to make something she doesn’t like and learn to make it great. For example, she used to hate eating meatloaf, but after a fan of her site left a comment relating a meatball to a big meatloaf, Perelman realized meatloaf was almost the same thing as a meatball. So she tweaked a couple recipes and made her own version of meatloaf she loves.
It is this sense of community, and Perelman’s prerogative to answer as many comments and emails as she can from fans, that helped her website grow and it also helped her meet her husband. He said he posted a comment on a recipe for hummus saying he might make it for a party and soon after the two started talking.
What did she make him on their first date? Penne alla vodka, although he didn’t finish the whole thing even though he said he loved it. Whether he liked it or not, ten years later he is still one of her biggest fans.
