Kathie Lee & Hoda: Getting Rid Of Summer Bugs
Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb talked with Julie Edelman, author of The Ultimate Accidental Housewife, as she gave tips on taking aim at all those annoying bugs that can ruin your summer fun. Check out her Mosquito Repellent Recipe and advice for getting rid of bugs this summer.
Summer Bugs: Bedbugs
Julie Edelman said that bedbugs are hitchhikers and when you go into someplace they go home with you. Julie said to check for bedbugs, look for little red spots, like blood, on your bed then and if you see them, then you have them. Also, if you have the little bites.
To get rid of bedbugs, you can steam them off, but you have to get the teamer to a minimum of 150 degrees and you have to keep it on the mattress for 15 seconds to really kill them and she recommends a Bissell Steamer.
Julie Edelman said another way is to take a needle and go along the seams and mattress piping because that is where bedbugs lay their eggs and you can catch them and vacuum them all up or better yet, get encasements. Julie said this is only for single locations, so if you start finding them in your laundry and all over, you have an emergency and call 911.
To avoid bedbugs in a hotel room, Julie Edelman said to put your luggage on the metal rack in room or in the bathtub because the bathtub is porcelain and bedbugs like hot, humid places.
Summer Bugs: Stink Bugs
Julie Edelman said you don’t ever want to squish stink bugs, because they have a stink defense mechanism. To get rid of stink bugs, Julie said to use double-sided tape where you know they are and you can catch them. Also, Julie said to use a Bounce dryer sheet on the window. Lastly, Julie Edelman said you can get a light trap to catch them, because stink bugs love light.
Summer Bugs: Mosquitoes
To avoid mosquitoes, Julie Edelman said that they can not travel in air that is moving, so crank up the fans. Another way is to get marigolds, which have a scent that repels mosquitoes, so plant them and put them in your patio. Garlic as well, but you will stink all day.
