Kathie Lee & Hoda: Drop 10 Pounds By Memorial Day

Kathie Lee and Hoda have had an ongoing segment about the best way to lose 10 pounds by Memorial Day and today they are talking with Today Show nutritionist Madelyn Fernstrom about the best ways to get rid of liquid calories. According to Fernstrom, if you can cut back on some liquid calories every week you are going to lose at least one pound each week.

Kathie Lee & Hoda: Make Wine Spritzers To Consume Less Calories

Kathie Lee was a little worried she was not going to be able to drink alcohol any longer but Fernstrom said that is not the case. She said as long as you drink in moderation, alcohol can be consumed from time to time during the week. Fernstrom suggested getting a smaller glass when drinking wine so you feel like you are drinking more because you can fill the entire glass with a single serving. She also suggested making a spritzer as well, adding that studies have shown people drink less when the drinks are fizzy.

Fernstrom said if you are a liquor drinker instead, always make sure to measure out the liquor and do not be fooled by clear mixers. Just because they are clear doesn’t mean they don’t have calories.

Kathie Lee & Hoda: Substitute Skim Milk For Whole Milk

Fernstrom said substituting skim milk for whole milk is going to cut your calories in half. She suggested adding skim milk to your coffee or even to some green tea, which she said can have a lot of calories although most people think of green tea as being healthy.


Kathie Lee & Hoda: Buy Store-Bought Shakes Under 200 Calories

Fernstrom said buying diet shakes from the store is great but you need to watch the calories. She suggested only buying shakes under 200 calories with 25 to 35 grams of protein.

Kathie Lee & Hoda: Get Rid Of Soda and Juice

Fernstrom said the most important liquids to stop drinking are soda and juice. Obviously it is important to stop drinking soda because of the sugar and calories, but cutting back on juice is a good idea as well because most juice has a lot of sugar.
