Today Show: Joy Fit Club Success Story
The Today Show co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb shared a Joy Fit Club Success Story with the audience members and viewers at home that was truly remarkable. Meet Derrick, a man who lost 344 pounds in a few years. Before taking his diet seriously, Derrick would eat anything around him, no matter what he was doing. He turned to food for everything in his life and his weight really altered his lifestyle for the worse.
In college, he passed up study abroad opportunities and internships. It was hard to be invisible, he said, and the laughter from others hurt his confidence to the point that striving for those extra opportunities was not feasible in his mind. He quickly developed health issues such as sleep apnea and topped out at 529 pounds at the age of 26.
His sister finally intervened and, while shunning surgery and other nontraditional measures, opted for the Weight Watchers program through the Joy Fit Club and began to shed pounds the old fashioned way. Today, he’s down to 185 pounds and was invited onto the set. He truly looks like a changed man and hasn’t needed any surgery during his transformation!
Kathie Lee & Hoda: Joy Fit Club
Joy Fit Club leader Joy Bauer discussed Derrick’s amazing weight loss story, while giving a few Weight Loss tips that will help anyone looking to shed those extra pounds in 2012.
For the first four months, Derrick was on a highly regimented diet of 3,000 calories per day and the weight was coming right off. Where most people go astray, Joy said, was to continue that specific calorie intake indefinitely. People end up hitting a plateau in their weight loss, often times feeling depressed and frustrated when they stop seeing real improvements in their body.
The key: keep lowering that calorie count as your weight drops. Today, Derrick eats only 1,600 calories a day, which is more than enough to hold on to his sleek 185 pounds. He’s even gone from a 6x shirt to a size medium!
There isn’t an exact science to decreasing calories over time, but they showed two tables on the set: one with the 3,000 calorie diet and another with the 1,600 calorie diet. There weren’t many differences other than portion size and a few minor tweaks. With a little bit of detailed note keeping and diligence, Derrick’s success story can be replicated by others. Kathie Lee and Hoda were clearly impressed with this success story, and so was I.
