Hoda told Rumsfeld of his rule about dogs, “I’m a total fan, I just got one.” Rumsfeld was pleased, and revealed that he and his wife said they would always have a dog. “We made a promise that we’d always have a dog.” Kathie Lee, however, wanted to tell Rumsfeld a little secret about an assistant she used to have.

“I have a confession to make,” Kathie Lee told Rumseld. “A couple years ago I had an assistant…and she was so in love with you. She called you ‘yummy Rummy.” Rumsfeld laughed and said, “oh no,” noticeably blushing. “You still got it,” Kathie Lee said. Rumsfeld laughed and told her, “Well, I play squash.”

Kathie Lee & Hoda: Four Rules of Marriage

Rumsfeld’s book is many years in the making. Donald has complied rules and quotes ever since he was young, and the book is a culmination of many years work. “I started collecting thoughts and ideas from people who were smart and wise, and I ended up sticking them in a file,” Rumsfeld told Kathie Lee and Hoda. “That’s where Rumsfeld’s Rules began.”

Most interesting and important were Rumsfeld’s four rules for marriage, which coming from a man who’s been married 58 years, seem foolproof. Rumsfeld’s rules about marriage include saying I’m sorry and I love you, things that seem simple enough, but  people often don’t say.

Following these rules have kept him and his wife happy, but there was also a dose of good luck. “We got married when we were 22. What did we know? What do you know when you’re that age? My goodness, it’s just good luck, it’s good fortune,” Rumsfeld said. Holding your spouse in high regard can’t hurt, either. Rumsfeld said of his wife, “She’s wise, so I listen to her.”
