Kathie Lee & Hoda: Julie Benz and Grant Bowler Defiance Review

Defiance has been in the making for five years and on April 15 2013 the long-awaited science fiction series will be premiering on the SyFy channel. Kathie Lee and Hoda had a chance to sit down with the two stars of the show, Julie Benz and Grant Bowler, to talk about the show and the video game that is being released alongside the show.

Bowler told the co-hosts Defiance is about living on Earth after a war ravaged the entire landscape of the planet. Aliens landed on the planet and went to war with the humans for nine years until the war finally ended. Unfortunately for everyone involved, all the aliens are stuck on Earth with no way of getting back to their home planet, if they even have one that survived the war.

“This is the story of America,” Bowler said, alluding to the struggles the characters have in the show when it comes time to figure out how to live with aliens on the same ravaged planet. As much as the story seems very science fiction, both Bowler and Benz said the series is more about the adventure and learning how to live side by side with aliens than it is about aliens destroying the earth and warring with humans.

The one thing that really sets Defiance apart from any other science fiction show is the video game that is being released along with the show. The game ties in with the series and is a MMO, a massive multiplayer online game.

Everyone on the fourth hour of the Today Show tried their hand at the game but nothing too exciting happened, just a whole lot of running. But the game does look fun. There are a bunch of vehicles to drive, aliens to shoot at and the levels look huge, like you could explore for hours and still find something new.

Yeah a game like Defiance takes a little longer to get into, and although I haven’t played it myself yet, I’m pretty eager to try it. I kind of went on a shopping spree recently so my checking account is looking pretty rough at the moment. So I won’t be buying Defiance, but that’s okay because I have Blockbuster @Home from DISH. Being an employee at DISH I try to test out all the different services we come out with, and I love this one. Before I got it, my gaming habit got out of control over and over. But since Blockbuster @Home is a flat pay-by-the-month service, my bill is always the same, no matter how many games I go through in a month–it’s saved me a lot of money(that I have, of course spent elsewhere LOL)!
