Kathie Lee & Hoda: Ralph Macchio Interview
Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb were joined by Ralph Macchio, best known for his role in Karate Kid, as he talked about his new series on the National Geographic Channel called American Gypsies, which premieres on July 17 2012 at 9/8c.
Ralph Macchio: American Gypsies Review
In American Gypsies, we are introduced to the Johnses, a traditional gypsy family also known as Romani family. Ralph Macchio is an executive producer for the show. He said he saw some footage about four years ago. It’s been a long journey and many networks, but National Geographic embraced it fully and we launch tomorrow night at 9/8c.
Ralph said two film students were putting together a documentary about the Johnses family in New York City. He said he found it a fascinating subculture. They have arranged marriages, their own language and yet they are at a crossroads. In the Johnses family, there are five brothers and the father is ailing. The family is not wanting to lose that age-old tradition, but wanting to give their children a chance at the American dream.
American Gypsies: Gypsy Traditions
On American Gypsies, the father feels that the traditions and the culture is waning and he feels that by adapting to modern times that some of those traditions will be lost. The family wants to bring down some of the stereotypes that people may have about gypsies, so that is why they agreed to the show. Ralph Macchio said they respect their elders and family comes first, which he believes are things that are relatable in a way to our society.
Ralph Macchio: 50 Years Old
To end the interview, Kathie Lee and Hoda talk about Ralph Macchio’s age. The man is 50 years old now, which is insane to think about, but even more insane is the fact that he likes like he is 20.
