Kathie Lee & Hoda: Jordin Sparks Interview
At 17 years old, she was the youngest contestant to ever win American Idol. Now Jordin Sparks is making her film debut in the remake of the 1970s movie Sparkle. Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb welcomed Jordin to the studio to talk about the movie and starring with the late Whitney Houston.
Jordin Sparks: Sparkle Review
Jordin Sparks plays the title role of the Motown girl who dreams of making music with her sisters in the movie Sparkle. She stars beside the late Whitney Houston in what was to be her last film role.
Sparks said it was incredible working with Houston. She said taking out of it that she is an amazing actress, I am a singer and she is a legend. She has always delivered on the big screen. Kathie Lee said the movie has a spiritual vibe to it and is much different from the original.
Jordin Sparks: Working With Whitney Houston
Jordin Sparks said Whitney Houston was very nurturing and made it very comfortable for everyone. She had a great sense of humor. Sparks said she was this mama bear and we were her babies. They really bonded. She was this motherly, amazing woman.
Hoda asked if there were any signs of addiction. Sparks said no, she would always have the biggest smile on her face. She would walk in and she would be blasting music and she would be ready to work and she was so excited. Sparks said for all of them to be a part of something that made her so happy was incredible.
Jordin Sparks: Acting Debut
Jordin Sparks said they cried so much. At one point she asked the director when they were getting to the performances. She didn’t want to cry anymore.For her role, Sparks said she didn’t take any acting classes before that. She did look it over with an acting coach, John Kirby, before her audition. She just memorized the script from front to back. She knew everyone’s lines. That was about it. Everything else she just learned from everyone on set.

Jordin Sparks said her character is the songwriter and youngest of the sisters. It is her dream to be a star and she mischievously gets her sisters to be involved. She is in the background at the start of the movie. It goes throughout their journey and things that happen and the choices they make and how they deal with them and then she finds her voice at the end.
